This award was approved by the IFTPS Board of Directors on November 17, 1999 to honor and remember the late Dr. Marvin Tung’s contributions to IFTPS and his achievements in teaching, research and consulting.

The award is given in recognition of academic, regulatory or industrial achievement in the areas of “preservation and packaging of foods”. In the context of this award, teaching is recognized as advising/mentoring, short courses, workshops and consulting, as well as teaching in an academic setting. The recipient must show past commitment to the goals and mission of IFTPS: however, service to the Institute is not a primary consideration. Also, numbers (papers, books, students, previous awards, etc.), academic tenure and corporate rank are not the predominant criteria. The award may be presented to deserving individuals whose contributions may often go unrecognized. The recipient receives an engraved plaque and a $1,000 honorarium.

Marvin Arthur Tung passed away suddenly of a heart attack on November 5, 1999 at the age of 61. Throughout his career, Marvin’s teaching and research focused on food material science, thermal processing and food packaging. His contributions to food science and technology have been widely recognized through many awards and honors.

Marvin’s professional achievements were admirable, but his unique personal qualities were as least equally memorable. Those who knew him will remember his quiet presence, unique mannerisms and playful use of words. Despite his demanding schedule, Marvin was incredibly unselfish with his time. He set aside his work and gave his undivided attention to anyone who called on him: moreover, he gave thoughtful answers to all questions and requests. He always appeared unflappable and calm, even under stress. He had an exceptional ability to adjust his language to the level of the audience, without being condescending.

As a teacher, Dr. Tung was demanding but fair, and expected students to understand concepts rather than memorize facts. He gave constant recognition to those who helped him achieve his goals, particularly his many graduate students. Marvin believed strongly in doing things to the best of one’s ability, and was quick to praise and acknowledge those who preformed well. Dr. Tung was a charter member if IFTPS and held the positions of Chairman of the Board and President from 1987 until his untimely death.
